Jan Roper, City of Light composer

“NMI has been transformative for me. It has literally been responsible for changing the trajectory of my life. How’s that for dramatic! I would counsel ANYONE interested in tackling this very all-consuming world of musical theatre writing to do it under the wings of NMI, as they are the ONLY game in town worth their salt.”

I have been working as a professional musician for 30+ years. For 20 of those years I led a very successful corporate show band (Spthat played hundreds of high-profile gigs mostly in the Southern California area, but internationally as well. In addition I have worked as a music director in the church, which allowed me the opportunity to regularly arrange for vocals and instrumentalists as well as compose songs, produce CDs, and write musicals, including Jerusalem A.D., a one-act rock opera on the Passion of Christ, which received a full-scale production to sold-out audiences 4 years in a row. I have remained active as a recording artist and producer over the years, having released 2 CDs and 1 EP, as well as producing other young artists with my production company, Breathing Room Music. For six years I was on the teaching faculty at Musicians Institute in Hollywood. and am currently at Coast Conservatory of Music part-time.

My “front burner” project is the musical, City of Light, which has seen several revisions, was workshopped last summer, and is currently one of the three selected musicals for the prestigious ASCAP-Dreamworks Festival. I am thrilled to be working with the 2 best collaborators in the universe, Julie Weiner and Gabi Wagner, and until we see this project on its feet, I don’t plan on seriously taking on any other musical theater writing project, unless I’m offered millions, or slightly less.
