Pursuit of Happiness from Bastard Jones The world premiere of Bastard Jones—a new rock musical inspired by Henry Fielding’s 18th century novel, The History of Tom Jones—which premiered Off-Broadway this summer. Small Craft Warnings: Mixed Metaphor Are you missing the boat because you’re jumping the gun? Are you counting your chickens before the cows come home? A quick example of mixed metaphors — and why your choreographer, designers and actors will all thank you for a unified metaphoric scheme.
Small Craft Warnings: Using your melody line to help stress a lyric’s meaning It’s not just the accents of the time signature which can affect the emphasis of the lyric. Words can be stressed by a change in the direction of the vocal line. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want. Other times, not so much.

The show focuses on a tradition in Afghanistan called Bacha Bazi: wealthy men take in poorer boys and train them to dance. The boys perform at parties and are often abused. This is the story of what happens when two of those boys fall in love. Small Craft Warnings: Accents on small syllables It seems obvious to say, but…you want the stressed syllables in your lyric to line up with stresses in the music. Here’s an example of a little tiny syllable getting an unwarranted stress…and you don’t want that, do you?
