The 15 Minute Musicals - RED Program

The 15-Minute Musicals are a 30-year-old tradition at NMI.  They’re the final project of our Core Curriculum; presented live in a theatre in Los Angeles.  They’re the hottest ticket in town, and always sell out.  THIS year, however, three of the 15-minute musicals — “The RED Program” — were all shot at our studio in North Hollywood, with social distancing protocols in place for the ensemble cast of four.

Ironically, this year’s theme was “Keep Your Distance.”

All three of the RED shows were directed by Scott Guy, and music directed by Ron Barnett.  Take a quick look at the the introduction to hear how we adapted the scripts and rehearsals to bring you these three wonderful pieces of “live” theatre.

THE TRAITOR

Book and lyrics by Stephen K. Nolly, music by Ron Barnett

Set in a dystopian post-Covid future in which touching has become outlawed and even insurrectionistic. We’re in a prison cell, in which an interrogator is trying to get two of the prisoners to turn on the third…any two…so long as someone’s found guilty. It has a dramatic, almost operatic score.

Directed by Scott Guy, music direction by Ron Barnett.

NOTE:  Contains strong language; not suitable for younger or more sensitive audiences.

A VIEW FROM THE MOON

Book by Richard Holland, music by Ben Ginsberg, and lyrics by Stacey Weingarten

Set in a tropical paradise, in which a Covid-stranded couple has run out of money, and an entitled rich woman thinks she can buy their gratitude and the affection of the hotel proprietor. This is a bittersweet, aching romance.

Directed by Scott Guy, music direction by Ron Barnett

I Need Space. Poor Andrey…he’s scheduled to leave on a flight for Mars in two hours, but fear of germs and sudden lack of toilet paper confines him to a bathroom, to the eternal horror of his roommates who have been trying to get rid of him for months. Can the unscrupulous Toilet Paper Blackmarketeer save the day?
