Have you written a musical? Are you working on one? NMI has smart, professional, detailed dramaturges who will help you make sure you are on the strongest path to fulfilling the promise of your work.
From video and audio feedback packages to one-on-one dramaturgical sessions, we have what you need to take the next step forward. We even have an annual contest that results in a workshop and concert reading in Los Angeles.
get some feedback…
Book time with an NMI dramaturge to discuss and/or get notes on your new musical in development - anything from an hour or two, to an in-person session for your full musical (or one act at a time); to a marketing/business consultation; to a “sandbox” approach to personalized development
Submit your completed musical for critical analysis and be entered in an annual contest to win a workshop and a concert reading in Los Angeles
Writing teams aged between 18 and 26 can submit to the annual deadline and receive a workshop and critical feedback from the NMI staff
“I couldn’t be more impressed with the folks at New Musicals Inc. …The feedback they’ll offer you on your work is astonishingly insightful and detailed. … I highly, highly recommend getting their input on your new musical projects.”
Tony-award winning co-creator of Avenue Q

The Academy for New Musical Theatre (the academic branch of New Musicals Inc.) has been offering classes and workshops for musical theatre writers, lyricists, and composers for decades. The organization was originally built around the master classes of Broadway conductor Lehman Engel; continued by our Founder, John Sparks; and expanded by the current staff.
Start with our famed Core Curriculum; then join our on-going Writers’ Workshop; take our offering of online craft labs; or check out annual Musical Theatre Summer Boot Camp.
hone your craft…
Our famed collaborative Core Curriculum holds open auditions every September; join us in person or via video conference. If accepted, you will write a series of assignments with a new collaborative team each month, and finish out the year with a production of your final team’s original 15 minute musical
Bookwriters, lyricists, and composers who complete the Core Curriculum are eligible to join our ongoing Writer’s Workshop with monthly one-on-one dramaturgy with the staff; readings of developing work through the Monday Night Reading Series; and the opportunity to write short musicals for production at the Hollywood Fringe Festival
Hone your craft on your own schedule with our online craft labs in bookwriting, outlining, lyric-writing, composing, and more
“I recently had the pleasure of working with New Musicals Inc. on a reading of THE GROUCH’S DAUGHTER. I’m deeply impressed with the care and intelligence of their creative input, and would not hesitate to work with NMI again.”
Tony-award winning composer of Urinetown
The best way to find out if a new musical is heading in the right direction is to get it in front of an audience. NMI presents new musicals in readings, workshops, concerts, and full productions in the Los Angeles area.
We also present a conference on the business side of the musical theatre business, and a festival of new works - every other summer in rotation.

New Musicals Inc., hosts many programs which support new musicals in development. We develop several dozen musicals each year for producers and writers all around the country through table readings, workshops, concerts, and occasional productions. Our academic wing, the Academy for Musical Theatre, offers courses, both online and live in Los Angeles, for professional musical theatre writers.
We’re a non-profit 501(c)3 organization (FEIN 01-0745909), so donations to us are tax-deductible. We are funded through an intricate balance of donations, fees for services, special events, conferences, concerts, classes, grants, fundraisers and royalties from musicals we have developed.

“It’s incredible what these guys can do to help a new musical. They are nurturing and supportive, and they help writers and producers conceive, develop, write, and produce dynamic, stage-worthy new musicals. I can’t recommend them highly enough.”
