  • Fee is $150 per actor

  • Breakdown
    • OTILIO MONTAÑO: Age 35–40
He is a loving and ambitious man. Not especially handsome, he is passionate about the revolution and more than eager to lead and save his suffering people. Like an impending thunderstorm, he bubbles with raw magnetic energy. However, his immodesty hides deep insecurities, having not yet fully realized how truly noble he really is. He at first taken aback when the people choose Zapata to lead the revolution instead of him. However, Otilio quickly learns to love Zapata and becomes his most loyal and hardworking devotee. Otilio emerges as one of Zapata’s two chief and fiercely competitive advisors.
    • EMILIANO ZAPATA: Age 30–35
Despite his genuine humility and modesty—or perhaps because this—Zapata inspires and totally captivates anyone in his presence. Where others might need to shout, a crowd will lean-in to hear Zapata’s every whisper. A reveler and womanizer, this genuine caring and loving “man of the people” has a mantle of leadership he never sought suddenly thrust upon him. He is—from that moment on—totally driven to rescue his people, at all costs. He will sternly admonish apathy while gracefully mediating competing interests within the revolution. His love of Josefa will be the only indulgence he allows himself.
    • JOSEFA ESPEJO Age 27
The love of Zapata’s life. She is compassionate, understanding and the only person who can make the stubborn Zapata laugh as well as listen. An heiress who gives her entire fortune to the poor, it is the sheer depth of her generosity and caring nature that makes her the only woman the single-minded Zapata dare pause to love. She is smart, tough and nurturing. The perfect woman for a man who must, at all times, appear indominable in public, but sorely in need of solace, in private.
    • MANUEL PALAFOX Age 35–40
An articulate and canny intellectual. Bred and educated in elite schools to be a capable functionary for the wealthy, Palafox has instead pinned his hopes on the revolution to advance his grand ambitions. More formally educated than Otilio, Palafox presents an impediment to Otilio’s political ambitions, as does Otilio to Palafox’. Manuel is arrogant, charming and utterly ruthless.
    • LUISA MONTAÑO Age 25
The love of Otilio’s life. The gentle, supportive and yet moderating force in his life that keeps his ambitions both alive and in check. She patiently listens to his every flight of fancy, before tenderly bringing him back to down to earth. She is loving, loyal, and yet increasingly distraught as the revolution progressively compels her husband away from their family.
    • LA CHINA Age 32
A confident, moderately tall, plus-size bundle of fire and wit. A tortilla maker, she joins the revolution to fight for the people and to lasso the handsome Salazar, Zapata’s long-time friend and right-hand general. She is persistent—if not seductive. She will stop at nothing to ensure the success of the revolution and the apprehension of her man!
    • SALAZAR Age 30–35
Handsome and dashing, Salazar is Zapata’s pre-revolutionary carousing buddy. Now he is one of Zapata’s most able generals. Unlike Zapata, Salazar has not forsaken women for the revolution. The prettiest of women find him the most striking of men. However, the boldness of La China’s pushy advances and her seemingly improbable expectations, totally discombobulates him. Before he knows what hit him, the handsome Salazar is forsaking his fan base of the loveliest for the gutsy tortilla maker from Ayala.
    • EUFEMIO Age 30
Zapata’s older brother. A drunkard and would-be womanizer. He is nonetheless devoted to his brother and the revolution. He follows orders as best he can, when he is sober. He worships Zapata and envies the handsome Salazar. also plays PRESIDENT PORFIRIO DIAZ - First of two presidents Zapata and the revolution must depose. Pompous and only half as erudite as he pretends.
    • JOAQUIN GARCIA PIMENTEL – 45
Well-spoken leader of the 17 families, wealthy plantation owners confiscating peasant lands on a grand scale. Pimentel is the embodiment of everything the Revolution is fighting against. He is erudite and serenely ruthless. He can charm you into serving his needs as easily as he can have you shot, to get his way.  Also plays VENUSTIANO CARANZA - stiff and pompous ally of Zapata and Pancho Villa; AMERICAN NEWSPAPER REPORTER
    • OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Age 30 also plays MRS. PORFIRIO DIAZ – wife of President Diaz and VARIOUS SECONDARY WOMEN & SOLDIERS
    • MRS. JOAQUIN GARCIA PIMENTEL - Wife of Pimentel also plays VARIOUS SECONDARY WOMEN & SOLDIERS
    • PANCHO VILLA - Gregarious Commander of the Division of the North. Also plays VILLAGE ELDER/PADRE MADERO or COLONEL HUERTA
      VARIOUS SOLDIERS, MESSENGERS, ETC.

Storyline:
Drive a ways outta town, somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, North Carolina and you’ll come to a filling station run by L. M. and Jim. Across the blacktop is the Double Cupp Diner, operated by Rhetta and Prudie Cupp. To look at it, you wouldn’t know that this little stop on Highway 57 is where all the action is, but trust us – once the boys get that guitar and bass fiddle revved up, you won’t want to be anywhere else. Pump Boys and Dinettes is a countrified musical packed with highly entertaining toe-tappers such as “Drinkin’ Shoes”, “Farmer Tan” and “The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine!” This Tony-nominated musical hasn’t been produced in Los Angeles in over 30 years.
THANK YOU!

Marvelous Wonderettes at Sierra Madre Playhouse

Audition Details:

Audition appointments available:  Sunday, May 7 in the afternoon, Monday, May 6 in the evening.

Audition location:  Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd, Sierra Madre, Ca  91024

DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER ROBERT MARRA

MUSIC DIRECTOR SEAN PAXTON

The Marvelous Wonderettes is a cotton-candy colored, non-stop pop musical. It takes the audience to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes – four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match. We learn about their lives and loves accompanied by the girls performing classic ‘50’s and ‘60s’ pop songs. The second act takes place 10 years later.

The girls should all sing in a bright, old-fashioned pop-belt style – no modern trills and thrills. Listen to Connie Francis, Doris Day, The Chordettes & The McGuire Sisters for act one styles; listen to Dusty Springfield, Lesley Gore, The Shangri-Las & Betty Everett for act two styles.

All roles require excellent tight harmony part singers, and old-school comedy skills.

Please prepare 16-32 bars of a 50’s pop song and a 60’s pop song – one ballad, one uptempo. Choose one and you MAY be asked for your 2nd song. Bring sheet music in your correct key, an accompanist will be provided. Please bring a picture and resume.

Character Breakdown:

All actresses to play 18 in Act 1, 28 in Act 2

CINDY LOU (18, 28) she knows she is the prettiest girl at Springfield High. She knows she will be named Prom Queen and acts out against her best friend Betty Jean when things don’t go her way. She makes the biggest change between Act 1 & 2, having learned the lessons of true love and loss. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano Belt: E3–F5. Sings melody line on most songs, so the other girls hang their vocals on this voice. Among the songs she sings lead are: ‘Allegheny Moon,’ ‘Son of a Preacher Man,’ and ‘Maybe’.

MISSY (18, 28) She is the over-achiever of the group. Very controlled, very concerned that everything at the prom turns out wonderful and perfect. Head of the prom decorations committee; and absolutely smitten with her music teacher. Her best friend is Suzy. Vocal Range: Soprano: G3–A5. Wide range, floating high vocals and belting throughout the show. Among the songs she sings lead are: ‘Secret Love,’ ‘You Don’t Own Me,’ and ‘Wedding Bell Blues’.

BETTY JEAN (18, 28) the class clown, tomboy, always vying for attention with Cindy Lou, her best friend. It’s also highly probable that Betty Jean wants to be with Cindy Lou herself, but just doesn’t even know what those feelings really are. Cindy Lou steals Betty Jean’s boyfriend away, which causes a lot of the friction at the prom. She holds this grudge against Cindy Lou until they make up at the 10-year reunion. Vocal Range: Alto with strong low range: D3–E5. Among the songs she sings lead are: ‘Lipstick on Your Collar,’ ‘I Only Want To Be With You,’ and ‘That’s When The Tears Start.”

SUZY (18, 28) Best friends with Missy, she is the happy-go-lucky one of the group – sometimes stereotyped as the ditzy blonde. Always smiling and giggling, nothing ever seems to bother her. In love with the lighting operator, completely surprised when named prom queen. Frustrated, sad, hormonal, and pregnant in Act 2. This role requires an excellent part singer and expert comedienne. Vocal Range: Mezzo-Alto with both sweet and soulful voice: G3–E5. Among the songs she sings lead are: ‘Stupid Cupid,’ ‘Hold Me, Thrill Me,’ and ‘Rescue Me’.

Casting Singers for HFF17 Musical “A Jingle A Go-Go: The Musical”

Audition Details:

Casting (and double-casting!) three strong male singers who can hold harmony both accompanied and a cappella to play campy drag queens in a Hollywood Fringe musical (no drag experience required, but must be comfortable playing a drag queen!).

Possible additional show on June 16/17/18 (one of these dates based on box office)

Synopsis:

In this gay musical comedy romp, jingle writer Robert experiences writer’s block for a lipstick product, and with a small cry for help, he is magically and mysteriously thrown into a world full of glitter and fairy dust, the topsy-turvy domain of passionate drag queens with larger than life attitudes who come armed with lipstick—ready to write a jingle for Luscious Lips, help Robert out, and rule the world—and all without breaking a sweat…or a nail.

Roles:

Jingles Present: the leader of the trio, Jingles Present helps Robert learn how to understand lipstick in order to write the jingle, and Present is also the leader, the one who brings Jingles Past and Future along, and who is currently the creator of jingle ideas; think Ghost of Christmas Present, but as a drag queen; in charge of the overall style of the jingle. Note: Must be okay dressing in drag, but drag experience is not required. Must have strong singing skills and be comfortable with tight harmonies and singing a cappella as well.

Auditions are Friday, March 15th at New Musicals, Inc. at 5628 Vineland Avenue

North Hollywood, CA 91601, 5:30-9:30,

Callbacks on Monday, March 18, 6:00-10:00

All races and ethnicities as well as gender identifications are encouraged to submit. We are an equal opportunity company. This is a Non-Equity opportunity.

Synopsis:

The Masher is a disturbing and often hysterically funny #MeToo allegory. Three women of wildly different backgrounds find themselves linked together in a minimum wage factory job where they have little more to do than push a button. The work is boring and underpaid, but what they don’t realize is their work is sinister. That button they are pushing is actually the “go” switch for something horrifying. But why? The story watches these women become aware of their place in this diabolical history, their chance to change it and finally in a macabre twist, their chance to avenge their cohort and friend. Like Hand to God, The Masher should make audiences both deeply emotional and laugh with a “What the hell was that?” response.

Doris McDonald: 45 to 60 to play 55-65. Conservative, working class, salt-of-the-earth woman. She is backwards, low-grade bigoted and lazy in her thoughts about other people, but at the same time, actually means well. We all know this woman, she is the family member or in-law we put up with grudgingly. One of the three leads, this actress will need to feel comfortable with long monologues.

Tae Stone: 25-35 to play 30. Lesbian feminist grad student, using the job to make ends meet. She is smart, emotional and loyal. CAST

Cassandra Troy 30 to 45 to play 35. Cassandra is a victim of abuse trying to escape a violent husband. She should be beautiful but worn-out looking—someone who, through too much abuse and constant stress, is always worried and her natural light and attractiveness is submerged. One of the three leads, this actress will need to feel comfortable with long monologues. Kissing scene with lesbian character.

Supervisor Jackson, 25 to 50. She is the direct supervisor to the women and a cold, exacting, perfectionistic “company woman.” She’s that bitch we have all worked with.

The Husband, Kurt 30-plus to play 45. This guy is a misogynistic coward, a sexist and a bro. With an anger problem and a heavy dose of both stupidity and narcissism, he is lost and overcome with his own selfishness. He sees his wife Cassandra as “owing” him and he feels she is his property. He is a bully until he is trapped and a coward when he sees that he is. Probably would wear a MAGA hat.

The Unknown Man, 18 to 35 to play college-aged. A young and friendly guy. Through a foolish mistake, he finds himself trapped in a deadly situation. There are millions of young men just like him—he was just unfortunate to live in a time where he gets trapped by his own unthinking choices and circumstances.

Mister Chi, the Security Guard, 30-60 to play 40plus. Chi is a friendly, low key guy, basically a good man, but in a low-end nowhere kind of job. He is helpful and kind but likes to keep away from trouble. He wants to protect his job.
