Writer/Director/Producer (Forever Plaid, Fun with Dick and Jane)
Stuart Ross is probably best known as the creator and director of the long running musical, FOREVER PLAID (as well as the Holiday sequel PLAID TIDINGS; and THE SOUND OF PLAID). He directed the show across the country and internationally, including Tokyo, London’s West End, Toronto, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago, to name just a few. Working with Phyllis Newman this past season, Mr. Ross adapted and directed the first revival of the musical SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING for New York’s York Theatre. He also staged a new sixteen member cast version of FOREVER PLAID (4 SQUARED) for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.
His other New York Credits include: ENTER LAUGHING, THE MUSICAL at the York Theatre (Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominations) as well as the acclaimed Bay Street Theatre production and the recent production at the Wallis Annenberg Performing Arts Center; STANDING ON CEREMONY: THE GAY MARRIAGE PLAYS off- Broadway and as a producer of the show in LA, he was awarded the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle award; RADIANT BABY-The Keith Haring musical at the Public Theatre, writer of Book and co-lyrics (Drama Desk Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel nominations for Best Musical); Gilbert and Sullivan’s THE GONDOLIERS presented in workshop for the Roundabout Theatre Company. For the York Theatre he also directed IT’S A BIRD IT’S A PLANE IT’S SUPERMAN, MINNIE’S BOYS, and SILK STOCKINGS.
On Broadway Stuart co-wrote the book (with Barry Keating) to the Tony nominated musical STARMITES as well as THE RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL EASTER SHOW. Off-Broadway he wrote A LEAP OF FAITH, a one woman show for Faith Prince, THE HEEBIE JEEBIES, NOT-SO-NEW FACES, TEA WITH BEA and FUN WITH DICK AND JANE: THE MUSICAL.
In Los Angeles Stuart directed REPRISE’S inaugural production of PROMISES, PROMISES (starring Jason Alexander, Jean Smart, Fred Willard and Allan Thicke) followed by the Reprise production of BRIGADOON (starring Marin Mazzie, Jason Daniely, Deb Gibson and Orson Bean); IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE for Pasadena Playhouse (Starring Alfred Molina, Michael Richards, Tony Shaloub, Sharon Lawrence, Orson Bean).
In San Diego Stuart directed THE BOSWELL SISTERS and BREAKING UP at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre.
He has worked as some of the countries most prestigious theatres, including Manhattan Theatre Club, San Diego’s Globe Theatre, Primary Stages, The Alley Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, Goodspeed Opera House, Cleveland Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse, Alliance Theatre, The Walnut Street Theatre.
For television, he directed sitcom episodes including FRASIER and VERONICA’S CLOSET. Stuart directed and created special material for the PBS GREAT PERFORMANCES, ‘AN EVENING AT THE POPS’ starring Jason Alexander .
For ten seasons Stuart has worked as a Director/Dramaturg and/or writer at the EUGENE O’NEILL THEATRE CENTER- NATIONAL MUSIC THEATRE CONFERENCE and for nine years he has been a panelist for the ASCAP/DISNEY Musical Workshop.
