COMMENTS:

In Dickens’ bittersweet homage to innocent love, an eight year old boy and a seven year old girl run away together with the plan of getting married. When the boy’s gardener discovers them at an inn, he claims that he will help them in their quest, but instead–feeling guilty of betraying their trust–informs their parents, who break up the tryst.
