The U.K. premiere of Jackie Sibblies Drury‘s Marys Seacole begins previews at London’s Donmar Warehouse April 15. Opening night is slated for April 21, and the show will run through June 4.
Kayla Meikle plays the title character in a cast that includes Déja J. Bowens as Mamie, Llewella Gideon as Duppy Mary, Esther Smith as Miriam, Olivia Williams as May, and Susan Wooldridge as Merry.
The production is directed by Nadia Latif with set design by Tom Scutt, lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun, sound design and composition by Xana, and movement direction by Theo Tj Lowe. Rounding out the creative team are voice and dialect coach Hazel Holder and casting director Anna Cooper. Josh Parr serves as the assistant director.
The work follows a real-life Jamaican nurse who worked during the Crimean War. It had its world premiere Off-Broadway in 2019 at Lincoln Center Theater, helmed by Lileana Blain-Cruz and starring Quincy Tyler Bernstine. Drury and director Blain-Cruz won Special Citation Obie Awards for their work. A filmed performance of the production was streamed via the From the LCT Archives series last year.
