New Musicals Inc.

… we create new musicals

Noho Arts Center 2012: A Ring in Brooklyn by Eric Dodson and Alan Fleishman

   curriculum

The Academy for New Musical Theatre (the academic branch of New Musicals Inc.) has been offering classes and workshops for musical theatre writers, lyricists, and composers for decades. The organization was originally built around the master classes of Broadway conductor Lehman Engel; continued by our Founder, John Sparks; and expanded by the current staff.

Start with our famed Core Curriculum; then join our on-going Writers’ Workshop; take our offering of online craft labs; or check out annual Musical Theatre Summer Boot Camp.

hone your craft…

core curriculum

Our famed collaborative Core Curriculum holds open auditions every September; join us in person or via video conference. If accepted, you will write a series of assignments with a new collaborative team each month, and finish out the year with a production of your final team’s original 15 minute musical

writer's workshop

Bookwriters, lyricists, and composers who complete the Core Curriculum are eligible to join our ongoing Writer’s Workshop with monthly one-on-one dramaturgy with the staff; readings of developing work through the Monday Night Reading Series; and the opportunity to write short musicals for production at the Hollywood Fringe Festival

online labs

Hone your craft on your own schedule with our online craft labs in bookwriting, outlining, lyric-writing, composing, and more

summer boot camp

Most summers, NMI offers shorter, concentrated courses for bookwriters, lyricists, composers, and actors in the musical theatre artform

   about us

New Musicals Inc., hosts many programs which support new musicals in development. We develop several dozen musicals each year for producers and writers all around the country through table readings, workshops, concerts, and occasional productions. Our academic wing, the Academy for Musical Theatre, offers courses, both online and live in Los Angeles, for professional musical theatre writers.

We’re a non-profit 501(c)3 organization (FEIN 01-0745909), so donations to us are tax-deductible. We are funded through an intricate balance of donations, fees for services, special events, conferences, concerts, classes, grants, fundraisers and royalties from musicals we have developed.
