The Tony-nominated musical now haunts the Marquis Theatre with Alex Brightman once again in the title role.

Take a trip to the Netherworld with Broadway’s Beetlejuice, which re-opens April 8 at the Marquis Theatre. Reprising the role of the titular poltergeist, Tony nominee Alex Brightman returns to the production opposite Elizabeth Teeter (The Crucible, The Audience), the show’s new Lydia Deetz.

Returning with Brightman to the company are Tony award nominee Kerry Butler, David Josefsberg, Obie award winner Adam Dannheisser, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, Kelvin Moon Loh, Danny Rutigliano, and Dana Steingold.

Based on Tim Burton’s cult favorite film, Beetlejuice tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager whose life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a demon with a thing for stripes. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter unleashes a (nether)world of pandemonium, and the biggest sandworm Broadway has ever seen.

New to the show along with Teeter are Michelle Aravena (A Bronx Tale, Rocky) as Miss Argentina and Zonya Love (The Color Purple) as Maxine Dean/Juno. The cast also includes Kate Bailey, Will Blum, Ryan Breslin, Natalie Charle Ellis, Brooke Engen, Eric Anthony Johnson, Andrew Kober, Elliott Mattox, Mateo Melendez, Ramone Owens, Commodore C. Primous III, Nevada Riley, and Graham Stevens.

Alex Timbers directs the musical, which features an original score by Tony nominee Eddie Perfect, and a book by Tony nominees Scott Brown and Anthony King. Music supervision, orchestrations and incidental music are by Kris Kukul, and choreography is by Connor Gallagher.

The creative team also includes scenic designer David Korins, costume designer William Ivey Long, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, sound designer Peter Hylenski, projection designer Peter Nigrini, puppet designer Michael Curry, special effects designer Jeremy Chernick, hair and wig designer Charles G. LaPointe, make-up designer Joe Dulude II, and physical movement coordinator Lorenzo Pisoni. 

Illusions are by Michael Weber while dance arrangements are by David Dabbon. Also serving are Rachel Vauder as production stage manager, Catie Davis as associate director, Nancy Renee Braun as associate choreographer, and Jenny Gersten as line producer. Casting is by Telsey + Company and Rachel Hoffman and music producing is by Matt Stine.

Marquis welcomed the show to its new home by soliciting artwork from fans last month to be featured on a gallery wall outside of the theatre between 46th and 47th Streets. Beetlejuice originally opened April 25, 2019 at the Winter Garden Theatre, going on to be nominated for eight Tony awards in its initial engagement.

Cases of COVID within the company of the world premiere Shaina Taub-penned musical have forced the production to adopt an unusual opening strategy.

The world premiere run of Shaina Taub‘s Suffs has cancelled its opening night performance as a result of a number of COVID cases within the company, including its writer and star Taub. In an unusual move, the production will move ahead with the press opening, with reviews expected to drop later this evening. The extended run, which began March 13, is currently set to continue through May 15.

The new musical features a book, music, and lyrics by Public Theater Artist-in-Residence Taub, also currently working on lyrics for the upcoming musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. The work examines forgotten women as well as their victories and failures in working against the divides and oppression they faced in obtaining suffrage for American women. Suffs covers the years leading up to the 19th Amendment.
