Tony winners and Oscar nominees Cynthia Erivo and Leslie Odom, Jr. are lovers caught in a sci-fi love triangle in the trailer for Needle in a Timestack. Check out the pair, along with Broadway alum Orlando Bloom and Freida Pinto, above.
Needle in a Timestack follows Nick and Janine as they live in marital bliss—until Janine’s ex-husband warps time to try to tear them apart using Nick’s college girlfriend. As Nick’s memories and reality disappear, he must figure out a way to get back to his original life.
Written and directed by Oscar winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave), based on the short story by Robert Silverberg, Needle in a Timestack arrives in theatres an on demand October 15.
This isn’t the only star vehicle for Erivo or Odom, Jr. The former will lead a remake of The Rose in addition to landing roles in the upcoming season of Luther on Netflix and the thriller Steel. The latter is set to star in the Exorcist film franchise reboot and the Knives Out sequel.
The Lehman Trilogy officially opens on Broadway tonight, October 14,at the Nederlander Theatre. The play comes to Broadway after acclaimed, sold-out runs at London’s National Theatre, the Park Avenue Armory, and in Londons West End.
Thoughts of a Colored Man, one of the first new plays to have announced an eventual Broadway premiere during the coronavirus shutdown, opens October 13 at the John Golden Theatre. The Keenan Scott II play began October 1 and was originally scheduled to open October 31 before pushing up its official premiere.
The production, directed by Steve H. Broadnax III, features Pose breakout Dyllón Burnside, Tony nominee Forrest McClendon (The Scottsboro Boys), Luke James (Showtime’s The Chi), Bryan Terrell Clark (Hamilton), Da’Vinchi (Showtime’s Black Mafia Family), Esau Pritchett (Fox’s Prodigal Son), and Tristan “Mack” Wilds (HBO’s The Wire).
The play, previously seen at Syracuse Stage and Baltimore Center Stage, explores a single day in the pulsing heart of Brooklyn, as seven Black men discover the extraordinary together through a blend of spoken word, slam poetry, rhythm, and humor.
The creative team also includes composers Te’La and Brother Kamau, set designer Robert Brill, costume designers Toni-Leslie James and Devario D. Simmons, lighting designer Ryan O’Gara, projection designer Sven Ortel, and sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman. Casting is by Calleri Jensen Davis.

Anthony Hopkins Joins the Cast of Florian Zeller’s The Son
This will be the second time the Oscar winner portrays a character from the playwright’s family drama trilogy, following his work in The Father. Also newly announced for the movie adaptation, according to Deadline, is Zen McGrath as Nicholas, joining the previously announced Hugh Jackman as Peter, Laura Dern as Kate, and Vanessa Kirby as Beth. (No word yet on who Hopkins would play.) The Son, also directed by Zeller and adapted by Christopher Hampton, follows two parents as they deal with their child’s response to their separation.
Outer Critics Circle Sets 2022 Awards Dates
As New York theatre begins to return en masse, another awards season is just on the horizon. The Outer Critics Circle has penciled in a timeline for its 2022 awards. Shows that open by April 24, 2022, will be eligible, with nominations announced April 26 and winners revealed May 16. A special reception (details to come) is slated for May 26.
Jackie Burns Releases First Single
Wicked‘s longest-running Elphaba has dropped a new song and accompanying music video; check out “Any Less Alone” below. The track is a collaboration between the performer (Hair, If/Then) and writers from both coasts: Los Angeles-based producer Aaron Kellim and New York-based librettist Eric Holmes. “I’ve learned that we all experience doubts and bouts of worthlessness; that it’s natural,” Burns says while explaining the message of the song. “There’s power in knowing that you’re not alone.”
