Dave Harris’ Exception to the Rule to Premiere Off-Broadway Spring 2020

Dave Harris’ Exception to the Rule, seen earlier this year as part of Roundabout Theatre Compay’s Underground Reading Series, will receive its world premiere in RTC’s Black Box Theatre in spring 2020. The production is part of the 13th season of Roundabout Underground, the company’s incubator program that has launched the careers of Stephen Karam, Steven Levenson, Jiréh Breon Holder, Ming Peiffer, Lindsey Ferrentino, and more.

Exception to the Rule, directed by Miranda Haymon, will begin performances April 30, 2020, ahead of a May 21 opening.

In the new play, which marks Harris’ New York debut, six students are stuck in detention in the worst high school in the city. They flirt. They fight. They tease. Should they follow the rules and stay put, or find an escape? Are the walls keeping them in, or are stronger forces at play?

The limited engagement of Exception to the Rule is scheduled through June 28.

Harris’ play Everybody Black is part of the 2019 Humana Festival lineup. He is an alum of SPACE on Ryder Farm’s Working Farm, a two-time finalist for the O’Neill Theater Conference, and a semi-finalist for The Relentless Award.

Haymon is an alum of Roundabout’s Directing Fellowship. She is a resident at The Tank; a New Georges Affiliate Artist and 2019 Audrey Resident; member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab and the Wingspace Mentorship Program; a Manhattan Theatre Club Directing Fellow; and a New York Theatre Workshop 2050 Directing Fellow.

Now in its 12th season, Roundabout Underground is part of Roundabout’s New Play Initiative, discovering new writers and providing them long-term development and production support. This season’s second play, Something Clean by Selina Fillinger, begins performances May 4.
