Performances begin July 11 at New York Theatre Workshop’s Fourth Street Theatre for the Off-Broadway premiere of Miranda Haymon’s In the Penal Colony. Written and directed by Haymon, adapted from Franz Kafka’s short story of the same name, the new work investigates the performance of power, patriarchy, and punishment.
In the Penal Colony stars Jamar Brathwaite, David Glover, and Dhari Noel as three Black men in an unnamed penal colony, asking what it means for them to exist in the media, when observed, when consumed, and when punished.

The limited run, which is the first show of the new Next Door series at New York Theatre Workshop, is presented by Hodgepodge Group and Lucy Powis through 28.
In the Penal Colony features set design by Emmie Finckel (Athena at JACK; Riot Antigone at La MaMa), lighting design by Cha See (Cute Activist at Bushwick Starr; The Triumphant with Target Margin Theatre), and sound design by Valentine Monfeuga (Let’s Get Ready Together at The Tank).
