MAN V MACHINE: Five brand new 15 minute musicals written by the 2012 writers of the Core Curriculum at the Academy for New Musical Theatre, and presented at the Colony Theatre in Burbank, California on June 26-27, 2012.

The writers for the 2012 15 Minute Musicals were: Matthew Alexander, Joel Bailey, Bryan Blaskie, Patrice Cassedy, Lawrie Chiaro, Mara Hitner, David Hollingsworth, Karla Kelly, David Orris, Richard Plotkin, Erik Przytulski, Jan Roper, Gabrielle Wagner, Julie Weiner, and Eve Weston The creative team was: Elise Dewsberry (Director): Jake Anthony (Music Director); Kevin Meoak (Producer/Stage Manager); and the cast was: Allie Costa, Luke Klipp, Shannon Martinous, and Kila Packett.

THE COMMON PARAMETERS Each season, the Core Curriculum participants are given a set of parameters before beginning work on their 15 Minute Musicals. Here are the parameters for the 2012 15 Minute Musicals.

THEME:  Man versus Machine: five short musicals about geeks, gizmos, and the battle of technology

 

COMMON DIALOGUE:  Each 15-minute musical was required to contain the line of dialogue: “way out of my wheelhouse”

 

COMMON LYRIC:  Each 15-minute musical was required to contain the lyric: “when all else fails reboot.”

 

COMMON MOTIF:  Each 15-minute musical was required to contain the musical motif (in any key, with any note duration):

PRODUCTION VALUES:  The 15 Minute Musicals have NO lighting cues,  and a minimal basic set.  Costumes consist of concert black with one add-on color per character/per show.

The 2012 15 Minute Musicals each had to use one common Prop – a small black plastic device somewhat resembling a cross between a smart phone and a tablet.
